What dosage of magnesium can I safely take with my other medications?

57 -year-old man2 years ago
Hello I currently take 4 capsules per day of magnesium bisglycinate 250mg associatedė per capsule has magnesium malate 250mg, vitamin B6 5mg and Taurine 200mg from ATPLAB. On the box it says "provides 50mg of elemental Magnesium". I also take a B-complex from AOR at each meal.

Hello Sir.
Magnesium bisglycinate contains about 16% of elemental magnesium, which is equivalent to a total of 210 elemental magnesium for you
I don't see any problem with this dose, but just keep in mind that magnesium can have drug interactions, cause diarrhea among other things, and is only beneficial in case of a diagnosed deficiency.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist

I thought that Magnesium did not have any drug interaction. Knowing that I am on an antidepressant, would there be any interaction with this medication. I thought it could help with generalized anxiety and enhance the effect of escitalopram 🤔
maybe then take the Magnesium a few hours after my medication
Naji-tom Samaha · 2 years ago
Yes indeed, magnesium can interact with some medications. If you provide me with a list of what you are taking I can check with you.
Having said that, there is no concrete data to support the effectiveness of magnesium in relieving symptoms of anxiety or depression.

-Omega 3 900mg (375mg EPA + 250mg DHA) associated with vitamin D3 500IU 3/day
-aOR brand B complex at each meal
-magnesium as mentioned above at a rate of 2 mornings 1 noon 2 evenings
-vitamin C liposomal 1000mg in the morning on an empty stomach
-saffron capsule 15mg AOR 1 in the morning very early and 1 in the evening after supper

Thanks for the feedback!
I don't see any interactions with magnesium with these products, thankfully :)

Apart from the Magnesium, do you see any interactions between these respective products and if not, can I continue to take them?
57 -year-old man · 2 years ago
I also have a second question if you agree?
  • what is the major difference(s) between escitalopram 20mg and sertraline 50mg?
Naji-tom Samaha · 2 years ago
I don't see any interactions a priori but you will have to confirm this with your own pharmacist.
Escitalopram and sertraline are 2 drugs of the same family, the SSRIs. They are like two different kinds of apples

Thank you for the answer ....
i would like to know if there is a drug that has fewer side effects, because I cannot tolerate escitalopram completely. It makes me feel restless, shaky and drowsy at the same time, and it is very uncomfortable, especially in the morning. Maybe with sertraline its side effects are less important?
Naji-tom Samaha · 2 years ago
Unfortunately, the 2 products have not been evaluated face to face, only against a placebo, so it is impossible to state with certainty that one of the two causes fewer adverse effects. Often, it will be trial and error
Both drugs can cause what you report.
When there are suspected side effects but the product works for a person, a dose reduction will be attempted, but your pharmacist will be in a better position to determine the options.

Is it possible that a person is deficient in GABA, which would cause symptoms of anxiety, panic attacks, etc., and that in this case the so-called isrs medications are not sufficiently effective in this context? And finally, is there a specific medication to treat GABA deficiency?

Thanks for the question, I'm sorry for the delay in my response, I hadn't seen the notification!
Anxiety is mostly caused by processes around serotonin. Therefore, with the current knowledge, this is the side that therapies are addressing

Thank you for the answer...I thought I read that vortioxetine had little or no side effects, which would be a godsend for those who are sensitive to the side effects of antidepressants in general.
there is also a molecule under the name "Seresta" which seems to be less dosed than xanax. Do you think it would be interesting to substitute xanax for seresta in a withdrawal process?
Naji-tom Samaha · a year ago
As far as I could find, Seresta is the brand name of oxazepam, which is available in Canada. It is a drug of the same family and equivalent to aprazolam (Xanax)
As for vortioxetine (Trintellix), it has not been studied against other commonly used antidepressants so it is difficult to determine if it is indeed better tolerated.

Thank you for your answer..
could you please enlighten me on the procedure in general (I am well aware that each case is unique) regarding the gradual withdrawal of antidepressants.
in particular, the time needed and the reduction of the dosage etc....?
Thank you again and I just wanted you to know that it is a pleasure to talk to you
Naji-tom Samaha · a year ago
As you mention, it is a case by case basis. We suggest a 25% decrease every 7 to 14 days. I am personally inclined to go as gradually as possible, and even more slowly at the end. To this end, you can ask your pharmacist for smaller capsules or tablets to reduce the dose, alternate between them, etc.
