My boy is 4 years old. His sleep has always been difficult. He falls asleep late and wakes up very early! I was recommended to give him melatonin. He takes 2.5 or 5, every night. I can really see a difference. He has been taking it for about 4 months.
Is taking melatonin harmful in the long run! I often hear that it should not be taken long term.

Hello, thank you for your question!
Indeed, I never recommend the chronic use of sleeping pills, even under medical supervision
Although melatonin is safe in the short term, its long term use has not been extensively studied for its safety and/or efficacy
Also, your child's day-night cycle changes over time, so he or she may no longer need to take melatonin
What does work, and what works in the long run, are non-pharmacological measures:
Avoiding any type of screen at least 1 hour before bedtime
Keep the bedroom ONLY for sleeping: no games, no reading. This way, the body will associate that room with sleep only
Make sure your child plays outside during the day, which will help regulate his circadian cycle
I hope this helps, and I'm available if you have any other questions!
