Hello!
If you are taking this medication regularly, it should be stopped very gradually. It is often suggested to decrease the dose by 25% every 2 weeks. For example, if you are on 10mg per day, we suggest taking 7.5mg (3/4 of a tablet) per night for 2 weeks and then decreasing
However, this is not the same 'recipe' for everyone, and withdrawal may take longer depending on the person. The important thing to mention is that the process is not easy, and in addition to quitting the drug, it is necessary to establish healthy sleep habits, including
  • Reserving the bedroom for sleeping only: no TV, work or reading in bed!
  • Regardless of what time you go to bed, it is recommended that you get up at the same time every day
  • Avoid or reduce stimulants (coffee/tea), especially in the afternoon and evening
  • Avoid screens, exercise and large meals at least 1 hour before bedtime.
It is recommended that you set up a schedule with the help of your pharmacist, who will be able to follow you more closely
If you would like some reading material, here is a deprescribing algorithm that contains information for patients and health professionals. This is the tool I use in my practice, from the website (deprescribing.org)
Hope this helps, don't hesitate if you have any other questions!
