Is 500mg of calcium enough for a menopausal person and should I take a magnesium supplement?

67-year-old woman2 years ago
Medium stage osteoporosis, 65 years old, menopausal at 46 years old. For two years I have been taking risedronate once a week 35mg + 1 calcium pill 500 mg/day. I drink a portion of milk once a day and eat a little cheese and yogurt. Is this enough to fight osteoporosis? I was told that it was not enough and that I should take another 500mg calcium pill. Also, in the same vein, I have a friend who is taking 150mg of magnesium to help with bones. I don't want to take too much, I have also heard that with magnesium you can make your gut loose. I am 65 years old.

Hello,
For calcium, it is recommended that people aged 50 and over aim for a total of 1200mg of calcium per day. Considering that you are taking 500mg of calcium as a supplement, your diet should provide you with about 700mg of calcium
To determine if you are getting enough, I refer you to the calcium calculator on the Osteoporosis Canada website
By entering the foods you eat on a daily basis, you will be able to evaluate what you are missing. Note that taking too much calcium per day is not beneficial to your health, hence the importance of calculating your intake before taking more supplements.
As for magnesium, you should know that its concentrations in the blood are easily measured with a blood test. This means that it can be easily detected if you are lacking. In addition, taking magnesium does not make the intestine loose. However, if you take too much, magnesium can cause diarrhea

I calculated and on average in my daily diet I take about 745mg calcium. I checked and I also take multiple vitamins Centrum which gives 300 mg + 500mg capsule. So, would I be correct?
reassure me....
for calcium, if you take too much, what is the danger?
for the magnesium 150mg, I thought I was taking it to help me sleep, I was told that it was good for sleeping and that it relaxed the muscles, what do you think?

Depending on what you are taking, yes your calcium intake appears to be sufficient. It is important to understand that 1200mg of calcium is an approximate goal and not a fixed number that must be reached
Consuming too much calcium over the long term (over several months) can lead to several imbalances, particularly in the parathyroid gland and the kidneys. It is necessary to consume it in very large excess to cause this type of problem, especially since calcium is also easily measured in the blood with a blood test.
As for magnesium, it pleases the mind that it could help sleep, but very few studies support this evidence. It is true that a lack of magnesium can disrupt sleep by causing fatigue and muscle cramps. However, taking magnesium when our blood tests don't show a deficiency, I can't tell you if it will really help

Will taking the 150g/day magnesium capsule interfere with the 35mg/week risodronate I am also taking?
Sarah-Yan Chagnon · 2 years ago
No, since your risedronate is taken in the morning and the magnesium in the evening.
