Cigarette smoking is linked to more frequent side effects in women taking a combined oral contraceptive, such as Marvelon. This risk is primarily related to the more frequent occurrence of blood clots. In the U.S. guidelines issued by the CDC, prescribing combined oral contraceptives is contraindicated in women over the age of 35 if they smoke. Although you may not be that age yet, and you may not be a heavy smoker, you should keep in mind that the risk is at least somewhat increased.
