What vitamin should I take to get pregnant in the next few months? Could my spouse also take it (e.g. zinc)?

Hello,
The main vitamin that is recommended to take when you want to get pregnant is folic acid. Indeed, folic acid helps in the formation of the nervous system of the child that develops during the first weeks of pregnancy. Therefore, folic acid (alone or combined in a multivitamin) should be started if possible 3 months before you want to get pregnant. If you want to get some, I recommend that you go to your local pharmacy. The pharmacist on duty, according to your file and your family history, will be able to evaluate the recommended dose of folic acid for you and even prescribe what you need.
Regarding your spouse, the use of vitamins to improve fertility in men is more debatable and there is no real consensus. Thus, I don't recommend taking a supplement out of hand. However, there are several measures other than medication that can be applied on your own that have been proven to improve fertility and child health:
  • Do not smoke cigarettes/drugs (if you do)
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Stress management
  • Decrease in alcohol
So, I would tend to put more emphasis on these good habits first.
I look forward to hearing from you,
Sarah-Yan Chagnon, pharmacist
