Hello,
Avamys is very important if one has nasal congestion but the treatment for a seasonal allergy remains an oral antihistamine (Claritin or Reactin syrup) throughout the allergy season. Ideally, the child should be allergy tested to determine the allergens involved so that appropriate non-medicinal measures can be taken.
Get well soon.

Hello,
The first step is to avoid the allergen in question. Here are some tips to help reduce exposure to pollens:
  • Avoid going out on windy days, as the concentration of pollen in the air is increased.
  • Choose outdoor activities early in the morning or late in the evening (where pollen is less present).
  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent your child from coming into contact with pollens outside.
  • When driving, keep the windows closed and use air conditioning.
  • After an outdoor activity, give your child a bath or shower to remove pollens from their skin. Put on different clothes.
  • Don't dry his clothes on the clothesline, as pollens may settle on them.
  • Have him wash his hands more often, especially when he comes home from outside.
  • When you have an outdoor activity planned, find out what the pollen count is expected to be. Choose times when pollen levels are lower.
Even if you do everything you can to reduce contact with pollen, chances are your child will still complain of uncomfortable symptoms. If this is the case, you may consider using over-the-counter medications, such as an antihistamine: Claritin: loratadine syrup (5mg once a day recommended for children under 2 years of age if weight is 30 kg or less, if over 30 kg, 10mg once a day) or reactin syrup (2.5mg once a day for children over 2 years of age, can be increased to 5mg if needed).
Before using these medications
  • Get a diagnosis from the doctor first to make sure it is seasonal allergies since many of the symptoms can mimic those of other diseases.
You should see a doctor right away if your child :
  • has trouble breathing;
  • has a generalized reaction on the skin, such as swelling, red patches or small pimples;
  • has any other symptoms that are worrisome or unusual.
