Venlafaxine: is there a way to counteract this rather unpleasant side effect?

34-year-old woman5 years ago
My husband has been taking venlafaxine 75mg since Christmas and since then he has had difficulties with ejaculation. Since he has been taking this medication, it has only worked once. As we want to have a second child, it is rather difficult at this time to think of succeeding. Is there any way to counteract this rather unpleasant side effect? Thank you very much for your help!

Hello, one of the side effects of venlafaxine is an ejaculation disorder. There is an "antidote" to this problem, bupropion. It is another antidepressant that helps sexual problems caused by medication. It can be added to the current treatment if venlafaxine is effective and your spouse does not want to change molecules. However, since I do not have your spouse's complete pharmacological profile, I would discuss it with your pharmacist to be sure that this pharmacological option is compatible with his or her file. If you have any other questions, please feel free to write to us again. Claude Tourigny-Gauvin

Oh!!! You are making my day! Sure we will talk about it with the pharmacist! To start the bupropion I imagine he will need to meet with his doctor for a prescription?

Yes, you will need a prescription from your doctor. Your pharmacist may offer to send you a pharmaceutical opinion, which may save you an appointment with the doctor. Of course, your doctor may want to see you in consultation anyway. This is at the discretion of the prescriber.
