What to do for gastroenteritis?

36-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello for the past 24 hours; I have potentially a gastroenteritis. I'm trying to hydrate, but I'm not keeping anything down, even water. I have crohn's disease so I'm worried about dehydration and the potential effect on the disease. I have cold sweats and intense nausea and vomiting. Any tips? Other than the classics? If ciprofloxacin is needed or would help, do I need to go to the hospital?

Hello. The first action to take in case of gastroenteritis is to reduce nausea and vomiting and fever as much as possible. For this purpose, Gravol is the most effective for nausea and vomiting, and is available in tablets, chewable tablets, drinkable solution, and suppositories if taking by mouth is impossible. This medication does not require a prescription but is available behind the counter in pharmacies. Your pharmacist will prepare the most appropriate form and dose for your condition and preferences and personalize the consultation.
Ciprofloxacin is almost never given to treat gastroenteritis. The situation resolves itself in the vast majority of cases
For fever, acetaminophen (Tylenol and other companies) is the best option.
Once your nausea has subsided, resume taking fluids but very gradually, i.e., a sip every 3 to 5 minutes. Here is a recipe for a rehydration solution:
  • 360 mL (12 oz) pure orange juice, unsweetened
  • 600 mL (20 oz) boiled water, cooled
  • 2.5 mL (1/2 tsp.) salt
The same goes for food: choose light foods such as soda crackers, soup and broths. Avoid foods that are too sweet or heavy like meat.
If your condition persists beyond 72 hours, or if you are simply unable to drink anything in 24 hours, head to the emergency room.
I hope this has been helpful to you, and if you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!
