What other treatments are effective for concussions? Are there any medications for chronic headaches?

Hi, my brother had a concussion on August 31, 2022. It is now January 8, 2022 and he is still not well. His doctor prescribed amitriptyline (10mg hs x7 days, then increase to 20mg hs depending on efficacy and tolerance). The day after taking this medication, he felt much better, despite the fact that the onset of action of the medication is much longer. Around day 7 of taking the medication, his headaches returned. We thought it would be a good idea to increase the dose to 20mg, thinking that it was the symptoms of the concussion that were returning. A week later, his headaches have increased again and he is lying in bed all day. He is 19 years old, has no allergies or intolerances, has no other health problems and takes trazodone as needed for insomnia.

Hello ma'am, I'm sorry to read about his troubles!
Treatment for a concussion revolves around managing symptoms such as headaches and insomnia. A neurologist is usually the professional to see if the family doctor or emergency room physician feels it is necessary.
For headaches, other options from the same broad family as amitriptyline can be tried but require a prescription.
If the current treatment is ineffective or insufficient, I recommend that you discuss the matter with your pharmacist, who can properly assess the situation and suggest alternatives to the prescriber, while ensuring close follow-up with your brother.
Otherwise, I would suggest a consultation with a physiotherapist with experience in dealing with post-concussion symptoms.
I hope I have been helpful to you and remain available if you have any further questions!
Sincerely,
