I have had a very bad pain at the base of my skull for 6 days. The pain radiates to the part of the skull behind the auricle. It also causes me headaches. I take advils every 6 hours. It relieves me for about 2 hours. I also tried to apply voltaren cream, no improvement. I have been advised to use antiphlogistine, but my skin has a big reaction as soon as I apply it. I use heat without any improvement. I am breastfeeding my 5 month old baby. How long can this last? Should I consult? Is there anything else I can take?

Hello, the pain may be caused by a muscular problem in the neck, which would explain why it is located at the base of the skull. I suggest you try a combination of acetaminophen/methocarbamol (Robaxacet), alternating every 3 hours with your advil. The effect of methocarbamol (muscle relaxant) could bring you additional relief. Also, this product is safe during breastfeeding. However, if this pain persists or increases in intensity or if your general condition deteriorates, I obviously advise you to consult a doctor for a diagnosis. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any other questions. Have a nice day, Isabelle Pelletier

Are you sure that robaxacet is safe for my baby? I asked the question myself at the beginning of the week at my pharmacy and they told me that it was not recommended if I was breastfeeding, that it would pass into the breast milk and that my daughter would be very weak!

In fact, according to the reference I consulted (Pregnancy and breastfeeding from CHU Ste-Justine), there is no data on the passage of methocarbamol in breast milk. However, given its rapid elimination rate (''short half-life'' in medical jargon), exposure during breastfeeding is not at all worrisome. So, for "short term" use, I consider it a very acceptable choice! Hoping to reassure you, don't hesitate to write me again if you have any other questions
