Is there a cough syrup that would be safe for pregnancy and taking Reactin?

35-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, I am currently 21 weeks pregnant. I have a virus that causes nasal congestion and coughing, is there a cough syrup for the night that would be safe for the pregnancy? I also have seasonal allergies, is it possible to continue taking Cetirizine (Reactin)? I am currently taking Synthroid 0.075mg SID and pre-natal multi-vitamins as well as a vegetable iron supplement. Thank you so much!

Hello, thank you for your question, and congratulations!
Cough syrups are not very effective in treating coughs. Unfortunately, studies don't seem to indicate that different syrups are more effective than drinking liquids.
Reactin is safe to take during pregnancy.
As for your cold and allergy symptoms, I strongly suggest, in addition to Reactin, nasal hygiene with saline water (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), can be done as often as needed during the day. By 'cleaning' the nasal secretions, we can reduce their backward flow, which often causes coughing. This is both very effective and safe every trimester.
I hope this has helped you and I am available if you have any further questions!
