Can Synthroid make my hair fall out? If so, how long can it last?

40-year-old woman2 years ago
I started taking synthroid and I am losing my hair, I am very worried. My thyroid gland is still in the normal range but I have positive antibodies against my thyroid gland so my doctor prescribed me synthroid, he recently increased the dose, is this a possible effect of my hair loss? How long will this hair loss last and will I get my hair back once my was stabilized?

Hello, thank you for your question!
Hypothyroidism can cause hair loss
If the Synthroid dose is adequate, it should not cause hair loss... If the situation persists, you should consult your doctor for a re-evaluation of your condition as a precaution.

My TSH is 3.55 and my doctor has increased my dose to bring my TSH to around 1, we know my thyroid gland is antibody positive so we suspect Hashimoto's disease but since taking the synthroid I have been experiencing alopecia...enough that I am headed for a depression. What would be the right thing to do in my situation? I am destitute and my hair loss is considerable

I'm sorry to read about your troubles!
Synthroid can cause hair loss if the dose is too high, but this does not seem to be the case with the information you have provided. Unfortunately, you will have to consult your doctor for a thorough evaluation of your case.
Sorry I can't be more helpful at this time

Ok but if however all my life antibody or not my TSH has always been naturally between 2 and 4, and my doctor wants to bring me to have a TSH of 1 with the synthroid ... can my body be turned upside down to the point of making me lose my hair considerably? If so what should I do? If I have to go this way, is my hair loss temporary and if so, how long will it take to find balance? Will I get my hair back or do I have to mourn it? Is the adjustment too drastic because since my last adjustment, it is worse than worse?

I can't answer that last question, unfortunately. You don't seem to be convinced of the relevance of Synthroid or of the change in dose... To this effect, I strongly suggest that you redirect your question to your prescriber, who will be able to evaluate if other causes are possible for your hair loss.
