Can Synthroid cause stomach discomfort?

I have been experiencing stomach upset for the past week. My synthroid dose was recently doubled, is it possible that the synthroid is the cause?

Good evening, I can tell you right away that Synthroid is not known to cause heartburn, so it would be surprising if it did. In order to complete my answer, would you be willing to answer some of my questions? when do you experience heartburn (e.g., all day? before a meal? after a meal?) -How intense is the heartburn (e.g., on /10) -Do you have a history of digestive problems?have you tried anything (medication or other techniques) to relieve your heartburn so far? Or of course any other details relevant to your situation. Have a good evening!

I can't tell if it's burning, I'd call it discomfort. No acidity comes up. It comes and goes, it's not constant. It's not a big pain so I would say 3 out of 10 but it's been going on for a week. I have frequent bloating but no diarrhea or constipation. My bowel movements seem normal. For the synthroid, my dose went from .25 to .50.

With your information, I would start by trying to avoid acidic foods (e.g. coffee, chocolate, tomatoes), spicy foods, alcohol, smoking and very fatty meals. Try eating smaller portions more frequently throughout the day. If not enough, you could take Zantac (ranitidine), if you are not taking other medications or have allergies to medications. You could take 75mg twice a day for a few days to see if it relieves the discomfort described and/or the bloating. Come back to me in a couple of days if the situation persists despite the medication. Oh and make sure to monitor your stool (no blood, no black) or the appearance of other abnormal symptoms. Please feel free to reply here to discuss. Good evening, Michael Cardinal, pharmacist
