Can vitamin E and D supplements help dry eyes?

30-year-old woman5 years ago
I was diagnosed with uveitis in early January. Since the last appointment in June, it seems to have healed. However, the use of cortisone has dried up my eye a lot. I am currently taking HyloDual drops which work for a while. After several blood tests and x-rays, the uveitis seemed to have no cause. The lack of information about uveitis led me to texts about taking extra vitamins that might help. I am an anxious person, so the lack of information does not help. Thank you for your help!

Good evening!
Thank you for your question!
First of all, it is important to know that uveitis can be caused by several things. For example, it can be caused by infections (viruses or bacteria), by certain autoimmune conditions or by an injury to the eye
In the case of recurrent uveitis, there are a few medications that may help prevent it, but these medications are not commonplace and I doubt that this is an option for you to consider, at least not at this time
For managing your current dryness problem, using moisturizing drops, like HyloDual, is a great first step. You could also opt for an ointment to apply at bedtime. Ocunox ointment is usually very effective. Because the ointment is oilier than the drops, it sticks to the eye longer and keeps it moisturized longer. The disadvantage of the ointment is that it slightly blurs the vision, which is why it is best applied at bedtime
To my knowledge, taking vitamin E and/or D has little or no impact on dry eyes or on preventing uveitis. On the other hand, some studies suggest that taking Omega 3 could have a beneficial effect on dry eyes
Hoping to have enlightened you, I remain available for further information

Note that if the dryness persists or is accompanied by other symptoms such as eye pain, increased sensitivity when looking at light, decreased vision, etc., it would be wise to consult an optometrist who will be able to evaluate the situation carefully

Do I need a prescription for ocunox ointment?
Laurie Hudon Germain · 5 years ago
Absolutely not! Ocunox is an over-the-counter ointment. However, some pharmacies keep it behind the counter. You can ask your pharmacist to tell you where it is!
Hope to see you soon!
