Hello, I have tonsillitis. I see white spots in the side of my throat and it is very painful when I swallow. Can my pharmacist prescribe an antibiotic?

Hello Madam, I am sorry to read about your troubles!
Unfortunately, pharmacists cannot prescribe antibiotics for this because tonsillitis requires a diagnosis to eliminate other possible causes, which is an act reserved for doctors.
If it has not been 7 days, I suggest taking painkillers: Acetaminophen (Tylenol and other brands) as well as ibuprofen (Motrin or Advil and other brands), if you have no contraindications to the latter (your pharmacist will confirm this) can help relieve the pain
You can also use lozenges such as Halls or Fisherman's Friend for local relief, and I encourage you to drink plenty of fluids, cold or hot as you prefer.
If the pain persists for more than 7 days, or if there is a fever for more than 3 days, you should see a doctor.
Also, because of the similarity of symptoms, I encourage you to get a rapid test for COVID if you haven't already done so.
If you don't have a test, don't go to a pharmacy, instead ask a loved one to go or check with your pharmacy to see if delivery is available.
I hope I've been helpful, and I'll be available if you have any further questions!
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
