Can I give cold and flu syrup to a child under the age of 6, but in smaller quantities?

Hi, my son has the flu. He is almost 5 years old and I am looking for a way to relieve his symptoms. He has a stuffy nose, runny eyes and nose and a lot of sneezing. I give him tylenol and advil, but it doesn't help with the sneezing, runny eyes etc...

Hello Mrs,
It is not the amount of the medication that causes a problem in these products but the medication itself that is considered unsafe in children under 6 years of age
If your child does not have a fever or complaints of pain, Tylenol and Advil can be discontinued
The best treatment for the symptoms you describe is nasal hygiene with a saline solution (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), which can be done as often as needed during the day, and at least 30 minutes before bedtime. By 'cleaning' the nasal secretions, we can reduce their backward flow, which often causes coughing. It's a little uncomfortable but works wonders!
I also encourage you to give your baby plenty of fluids to drink, either cold or hot, depending on her preference.
If the situation does not seem to improve after 7 days, I invite you to contact me.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist

Hello,
Thank you for the answer. I will continue the nasal hygiene, but it's not easy, he doesn't really let himself do it
But indeed, he has no more fever and is starting to have energy again
Thank you for your help!

Glad to hear from you! I recently learned that doing nasal hygiene in the bath can greatly improve tolerance! I even recommend it as a preventive treatment!
I wish her a speedy recovery, don't hesitate if there is anything!
