I take seroquel (25mg) for my insomnia problems. I have heard that this medication causes weight gain. Is it because this medication increases my appetite or slows down my metabolism?

Hello,

Seroquel (quetiapine) can actually cause weight gain. This side effect is dose-dependent, so people taking low doses (less than 100mg/day) usually see less of this effect.

The drug may cause an increase in appetite, but in less than 10% of people. For most people, the weight gain seems to be caused more by the fact that the drug (especially in high doses) causes drowsiness and fatigue, reducing the willingness of some people to exercise and move. The drug also sometimes causes an increase in blood sugar, which can be conducive to weight gain.

So know that in your case, at the dose you are taking, there is no need to worry if you keep moving. Being aware of this possible side effect is the first step towards maintaining your weight!
