I have frequent and heavy nosebleeds. Is this a cause for concern?

Hello Ma'am,
The nose contains many blood vessels that serve to warm and humidify the air we breathe. In fact, these vessels are fragile and several causes can make nosebleeds, among others:
  • Having a dry or irritated nose, we can moisturize the nose with a saline solution or with a hydrating nasal solution (for example: Rhinaris)
  • Allergies, a cold or sinusitis
  • A bleeding disorder or taking blood thinning medications
Generally, we don't worry when we can find a specific cause for nosebleeds. We'll use the nose pinch technique here to decrease bleeding.
On the other hand, it is recommended that you see a doctor if:
  • if the bleeding lasts longer than 20 minutes, without stopping;
  • if the bleeding was caused by an accident (fall, head injury) that could have caused a fracture;
  • if the nosebleeds are frequent, chronic;
  • if you are taking blood thinning medications (ex. Aspirin) or blood thinners (e.g. Coumadin, Eliquis, Xarelto, etc.)
Do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions.
Happy day,
Kamilia Idir, Pharmacy Intern. Supervised by Alexandre Chagnon, pharmacist.
