I've been bleeding more and more since my last report, should I be worried and go to the doctor?

I have been bleeding more and more heavily since my last intercourse. Let me explain, I've been on the birth control pill (the one that gives you a "period" every 3 months) for about 3 years, I've also been sexually active since I was about 13 and I'm now 17. I've been having sex with the same guy for a little over a year and I usually bleed a little during and sometimes after sex but nothing that has really worried me until now. However, during our last intercourse on Friday (4 days ago), I bled more than usual and since then, I've been bleeding more and more heavily: the first two days I didn't need any protection, yesterday I had to put on a panty liner and this morning I wake up and my pants are stained with blood. I also have little cramps. It's like I'm in my week, but I'm on the pill so I'm confused.

Hello Mrs,
Periods of bleeding can occur even with continuous use of the contraceptive. This does not necessarily indicate a problem as long as the bleeding is light and temporary. I encourage you to continue taking your contraceptive as planned if you are willing to do so.
If the bleeding persists for more than a week without improvement or gets worse, you should consult a doctor as a precaution.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
