What is the risk of pregnancy after a one-day lapse in birth control?

26-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, I forgot my birth control pill on Tuesday night. I took both yesterday when I realized that I had forgotten. I have been taking the pill for several years and I almost never forget it. Since I had sex on Tuesday I am wondering if I am at high risk of pregnancy.

Hello Mrs
There are several pieces of information missing in order to answer you correctly:
1 - At what time do you usually take your pill?
2 - What time did you realize the next day that you had forgotten to take the 2 tablets?
3 - What week of your pack were you on when you forgot?
4 - Have you had unprotected sex since starting your new pack?
Thank you for your time!

1- I usually take my tablet at 9:30-10:00 pm.
2- I only realized it the next day at the same time when I took my tablet.
3- It was the last tablet of the first week and the first of the second.
4- Yes, I have had the same partner for 8 years, so we no longer use any contraception other than my pill

Thank you for the information. However, I feel obliged to refer you to your pharmacist: a forgetfulness during the first week usually requires a consultation to assess the need for emergency oral contraception. Your pharmacist will be able to initiate the short consultation with you and help you manage the rest, while documenting your file and following up with you.
Sincerely
Tom Samaha, Pharmacist
