Should I continue the birth control pill at age 52?

54-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, I am 52 years old, I am still taking the contraceptive pill and I do not know if I am menopausal. I don't have any hot flashes and I don't think I'm any more irritable than usual ;-) and the nurse who took care of me doesn't want to do the blood test to confirm it because according to her it doesn't mean anything. I have high blood pressure and several of my family members have had heart problems.

Hello Madam, thank you for your question!
Indeed, a blood test will not inform about the diagnosis of menopause and will be even less reliable because of the use of a contraceptive.
It is recommended that you stop taking birth control around the age of 50-51 because the chances of conceiving are extremely slim. If symptoms do occur, hormone replacement therapy may be considered depending on the assessment that follows. The doses used in hormone replacement therapy are much lower than the doses in contraceptives.
Be aware that menopause can occur without any of the symptoms you have listed...
Is there a particular reason why you want to continue taking the contraceptive?

Thank you so much for your quick response!!!
I've been wanting to get off the pill for a year now, but my nurse told me that the risk of pregnancy is still present at my age. It should be noted that my spouse did not have the vasectomy, hence my concern.
If I can stop it, I would be very happy! Do you recommend it?

Yes, the risk is still there but at 52 I don't see the benefit of continuing. If it can reassure you, I invite you to discuss this with your pharmacist and doctor :)

Okay, I will try to discuss this with the pharmacist, I am unfortunately not lucky enough to have a family doctor anymore.
Thank you :-)

We'd love to!
If you haven't done so, I invite you to register for a family doctor here
