Can I resume Ozempic if I had stopped it?

61-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, I had been taking Ozempic for a couple of years at the minimum, I took it, dropped it and took it again 3 or 4 times but when I increased it I was sick (vomiting), I had to say that I was not eating too well at the time, but now I was at the minimum and I had stopped the sugar like the Keto diet, I was gaining fat but I was not in ketosis, I was still eating more sugar than I would have been if I had gone into ketosis. I also decided to increase my Metformin pill to 1 1/2 without knowing that I should not cut it, so I was at 1500mg and my sugar was fine. My endocrinologist told me that she was proud of me and that it was probably not Ozempic that made me lose weight and do well like that but mostly Keto and since I am about to have bariatric surgery, I know that I have to stop Ozempic, so I decided to stop it, But my sugar started to rise a little and my pharmacy told me that I could not cut my metformin in 2 because it was wrapped, so I tried to take 2 instead and I tolerate them well (no diarrhea) but my sugar is always higher and higher, I get up in the morning, noon at 9 or 10 when I eat my lunch it goes up to 12 or 13 and it goes down again towards the end of the afternoon to go back up in the evening. However, I am careful with sugar. At the end of September I also got a prescription for B12 from the hospital where I'm going to have bariatric surgery and about 3 weeks ago my family doctor prescribed me a magnesium pill at bedtime for cramps in my feet and legs in the early hours of the morning. Could this be what is raising my blood sugar or I think I may have anemia and that would be what is raising my blood sugar. I don't know what to think. It was going so well, or should I start taking Ozempic again because I still don't have my surgery date. I'm sorry it's very long but it's so that you understand my case. Thank you for your advice in advance.

Hello Mrs., thank you for your question!
Taking B12 and magnesium will not increase your blood sugar levels. Also, there are other solutions that could be added to metformin, if deemed necessary, and depending on your other history (hypertension for example)
Unless your doctor advises otherwise, I don't see a problem with starting Ozempic again at this time. It will have to be restarted at the lowest dose to reduce the risk of nausea, among other things
Furthermore, your pharmacist will be in a better position to advise you and, if necessary, suggest recommendations to your doctor.
Sincerely
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
