What to give my cat-allergic son?

Good evening, my son, soon to be 4 years old, after a visit to my sister's house who has cats and a rabbit, Coco spent the evening sneezing and then his nose became congested. We gave him a dose of claritin for children before bedtime because I think he had an allergic reaction to animals. 1 hour after he went to bed he had a coughing fit like a bark. We took him and made him drink ice water and tried to make him breathe the cold air of the fridge like when he had laryngitis 2-3 weeks ago. 3 weeks ago the doctor we saw for the laryngitis advised the use of advil for its anti inflammatory properties. Should we give it in this situation? And in addition to claritin is it safe? Can an allergy happen so suddenly when it is not a first contact and cause re-inflammation of the larynx?

Good morning, ma'am,
Unless there is pain or inflammation, Advil is not relevant. Although it is compatible with Claritin, the description of the situation does not seem to indicate its necessity.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, Pharmacist

Is this kind of reaction plausible to an animal allergy?

An allergy to animals can indeed cause coughing, yes

Okay we are seeing his doctor in 2 weeks for a follow-up so I can see with her what she suggests for the next step until then we will avoid putting him in contact
good evening

You can also give Claritin regularly for a few days, and at least 1 hour before a visit. Nasal hygiene is also very helpful before and after visits.

Can a reaction to animals last a few days after exposure? My coconut is still congested and has a dry cough tonight 24 hours after leaving the place where the cats and rabbit were

Hello,
Yes, histamine can indeed have an action over several days. Claritin may take 3 to 5 days to take full effect. I encourage you to continue nasal hygiene as often as necessary.
