Is it possible for a pharician to evaluate an ear infection?

I was vaccinated with the 2nd dose of the covid vaccine( pfizer). I had congestion following the vaccine. Now, 5 days later, I have pain that looks like an ear infection. Is it possible for a pharmacist to evaluate if there is an ear infection and prescribe medication?

Hello,
The pharmacist is the medication specialist. He is not qualified to examine your ear and diagnose an ear infection or to prescribe medication for it
The only treatment available over the counter is for "swimmer's ear". These are external ear infections that occur when our head has been under water and fluid has remained in the ear. At this time, ear drops can be used.
If you still have congestion, be aware that nasal congestion can cause ear pain by blocking the canal between the nose and the ear. At this point, a decongestant may be offered by the pharmacist to help
If your symptoms are not related to the 2 elements mentioned above, you should consult a doctor or a nurse. However, if your pain is not severe, you do not have a fever and you have not had a sudden loss of hearing (perforation of the eardrum), it is possible to wait 48-72 hours before consulting a doctor. In fact, many adult ear infections are caused by a virus and resolve on their own.
Hope to see you soon,
Sarah-Yan Chagnon, pharmacist
