My baby has been receiving amoxicillin for a few days and seems to have patches on his body, what should I do?

Hello, my 9 month old baby started a treatment for pneumonia this Friday. He had 4 doses so far 5 ml each of amoxicilin. Yesterday he started to have small red patches on his neck (like pimples but not raised) this morning he has a lot on his back, stomach and neck. Can he have benadryl to avoid an increase of the reaction, and what to stop the medication and call the doctor?

Hello ma'am,
I'm sorry to read about his troubles!
When this kind of plaque appears, the antibiotic should be stopped and a doctor should be consulted quickly to
  • evaluate the possibility that the antibiotic is the cause
  • Re-evaluate the relevance of treating with another antibiotic
This being said, while waiting to see the doctor again, I recommend that you call your pharmacist who will be able to tell you the exact dose of Benadryl, which is calculated according to the child's weight and the concentration of the product chosen. This will also help your pharmacist to potentially suggest alternatives to the doctor and ensure a close follow-up with your child.
