  • In an adult, a normal heart rate ranges from 60 to 100 beats per minute. In athletes, we may observe a pulse rate around 50 beats per minute
  • For example, if the heart rate is 60 beats per minute, it may mean that the heart beats once per second. However, there may be variations and have, for example, 0.90 seconds (900 ms) between two beats and a 1 second (1000 ms) between two other beats. In this example, the heart rate variability will be 100 ms
  • The heart rate variability will be low if the intervals between heartbeats are constant. And it will be high, if that interval is variable. This variability in ms will be dependent on age, sex, position, time of taking.
  • You could do this by observing your pulse over 3 minutes but the most accurate way to measure it is to do an electrocardiogram (ECG)
