My child has very swollen tonsils?

33-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, my son has very very swollen tonsils. A doctor on the phone told us that it was probably viral and we are waiting for tests like throat culture and blood test but the appointment is in another week, note that his tonsils are very swollen to the point that his cheek on one side is swollen. He has no symptoms other than to tell us that he has a sore throat.

Hello! I'm sorry to read about your son's troubles!
If your son has no contraindications to taking ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin and other companies), it is the best medication to reduce swelling and pain. It is available as a melting tablet, or as a suspension, depending on your son's preference.
It is a medication that is administered according to a child's weight, so I suggest that you contact your pharmacist who will tell you the exact dose (in tablets or suspension) to administer to your son.
It would be ideal to give it to him with a little food (or yogurt, milk, jello or other), to reduce the risks of stomach irritation.
I hope I've reassured you, so please don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions!
