Hello,
During pregnancy, we try to limit the use of medication as much as possible.
So first of all, we try to focus on non-pharmacological measures, such as staying adequately hydrated, putting a humidifier in the room, resting and using nasal rinses with salt water for nasal congestion.
If the person is not relieved, certain medications can be used, but they will try to treat only the symptoms that are present.
Acetaminophen (Tylenol) alone(not combined in cold and flu formulations) is safe in pregnancy and can help treat sore throat, headache and fever. However, a pregnant woman who presents with a fever over 38.5C should also be referred to her doctor for evaluation.
For sore throat, lozenges are probably safe, but given their limited effectiveness, salt water gargles are preferred.
For congestion, salt water rinses can be used as mentioned above.
If there is a cough, the first line agent is dextrometorphan or DM. A syrup with only this as the active ingredient should be taken if possible.
Any medication taken will also depend on the patient's allergies and other health conditions.
I hope this helps, if there are any other questions, please feel free to contact me again.
Thank you for your time.
Steven
