My dad's regular doctor retired. The new doctor renews all the prescribed medication, but hesitates about Quinine. He mentioned that this medication could be dangerous, but decided to renew it anyway. My father has heart problems and poor circulation. Should I be concerned?

Hello,

This is indeed worrisome. This drug has been the subject of a Health Canada advisory (https://www.canada.ca/fr/sante-canada/services/medicaments-produits-sante/medeffet-canada/infovigilance-produits-sante/bulletin-canadien-effets-indesirables-volume-21-numero-2-avril-2011.html#a4) to warn all Canadians and their health care professionals of the risk of serious adverse events associated with this drug. Some patients have experienced severe cardiac arrhythmia or bleeding disorders. I recommend that you talk to your doctor again to find an alternative treatment.

Thank you very much for the quick response. We have an appointment with another doctor this week. Are there any possible side effects if the quinine is stopped promptly?
Alexandre Chagnon · 6 years ago
It is very unlikely that your father will experience any effects. We frequently stop it in the hospital and in some cases patients see a return of their restless leg symptoms, but not in all cases. This is theoretically the only effect your father could experience.
