How long do I have to wait for the protection during sex to take effect again

Hello, I went on a trip and I forgot to buy another pack of birth control pills (yaz). When I came back to Quebec, I started it again after 10 days off (including 7 days of period)

Hello,
Since you have extended your discontinuation period from 7 to 10 days, you have effectively lost the contraceptive effect of your medication.
Therefore, to answer your question, it will take 7 days to regain the protection of your contraceptive. Therefore, you will need to use additional contraception for the first 7 days of your pack. By the 8th day, your contraceptive will be effective again.
Remember, however, that unprotected intercourse that may have occurred up to 5 days before the first day of the missed pack is at risk of pregnancy. If this is the case, I recommend that you consult your pharmacist to evaluate the use of emergency contraception.
I hope that I have answered your question correctly,
Pierre-Luc Tremblay, pharmacist
