Can taking Maxidex without shaking it for 4 days after surgery cause irreversible damage?

29 -year-old man2 years ago
I had a CXL due to keratoconus 4 days ago. At my first two follow-up appointments, I was told that I had excellent vision for someone who had just had surgery. I have been taking my drops diligently, but this morning I started to see less well. At my follow-up appointment, the surgeon asked me if I was using the Maxidex drops as prescribed. As I was, she asked me if I was shaking the bottle... I never did. She explained to me that I had to shake the bottle of Maxidex since it was a suspension... Something the pharmacist never told me to do! I know that these drops are the most important because they are used to avoid having a scar on the eye that would create a veil... However, since my surgery, I only put the oil without the medication and now I have a veil.

Hello, thank you for your question!
There are several possible causes for the symptoms you are reporting, but given your recent procedure, I strongly urge you to re-consult your ophthalmologist to evaluate your condition, just to be safe.
Sincerely
Tom Samaha, pharmacist

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply.
I re-consulted her today before asking the question here. Now I have to put the Maxidex drops every 2 hours, but she didn't tell me if it caused any damage.... I was a little upset and mostly sad to find out only after 4 days that I had to shake the bottle.... I was wondering if there could have been any consequences

Thanks for the feedback! I am relieved that you will be able to have a close follow-up. However, your follow-up appointments in the next few days and weeks will determine what happens next.
