Why is cortisone such as Cortoderm contraindicated for people with cold sores?

33-year-old woman5 years ago
Hello, I have been prescribed Cortoderm 1% for what appears to be eczema. What does this have to do with the contraindication of the product for cold sores? I am a carrier, but I don't have any cold sores right now. I was wondering if using the ointment is only contraindicated if you have an active lesion. Thank you.

Hello,
Topical cortisone such as Cortoderm should not be applied to active cold sore lesions
This is because cortisone has an immunosuppressive effect, which means that it decreases inflammation by reducing the local action of our immune system. In the context of eczema, this is the desired effect since it is an inflammatory disease. However, in the context of an infection such as a cold sore, the cream could delay healing
