I am taking citalopram. Can I take it with my triptan?

Hello,
In people with migraines, depression or anxiety is generally more common than in the normal population. Therefore, a person could be prescribed a triptan and an SSRI, such as citalopram. Theoretically, these 2 drugs work by increasing serotonin levels and therefore, taking them together could increase the risk of serotonin syndrome. However, this phenomenon is very rare . It is important to treat both migraine and depression, and the combination of triptan and citalopram is widely and safely used.
It is still important to know what symptoms to watch for and to seek medical attention promptly if you are experiencing these symptoms:
  • Altered mental status: confusion, delirium
  • Hyperactivity: tachycardia, fever, sweating, diarrhea
  • Neuromuscular abnormalities: weakness, incoordination
I repeat that this reaction would be rather theoretical, not clinically significant and rare, and that the combination of these 2 drugs is widely and frequently used.
