My baby has a lot of diarrhea with Clavulin?

32-year-old woman2 years ago
My 7 month old baby has been taking an antibiotic for 4 days for an ear infection. He has a lot of diarrhea (no dehydration though) and tonight, a lot of pain from which I could hardly tell. He takes Clavulin - 400, 4.6 ml twice a day. He weighs about 18 pounds. I feel like my baby is not getting the right dose of antibiotic.... Can you tell me if the dose of antibiotic is right (Clavulin-400, 4.6 ml twice a day, 7 month old baby, 18lb)?

Hello ma'am,
The dose of this antibiotic for an ear infection is 90mg of amoxicillin per kg of weight per day. According to the dose of 4.6ml twice a day is exactly what your child is getting :)
That being said, diarrhea is a common side effect with this medication
If it becomes intolerable, or jeopardizes the possibility of completing the treatment, your pharmacist can help you by adjusting the dose to ensure better tolerance. I invite you to contact him/her as soon as possible :)
I hope this has been helpful to you and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me!

Hello again!
I've been giving him his antibiotic for 5 days now, and since yesterday, it seems that the pain is back like before... Is this normal or should I consult again?

Hello again!
If he has no other symptoms such as fever, just monitor the situation. You can give him acetaminophen (Tylenol or Tempra) along with the antibiotic to relieve the pain
However, if the pain persists for more than 3 days, you will need to consult again, just to be safe.

Thank you! What causes the pain to return despite improvement at the beginning of treatment?
Thanks in advance!

Several causes may be involved, it is difficult to establish a cause without a physical evaluation, unfortunately
