Is it possible that menstruation is triggered so close to ovulation?

31-year-old womana year ago
Hello, I gave birth in June 2022 and have been breastfeeding my daughter until recently. I still pump sometimes but in small amounts. Last November I started ovulation testing to try to get pregnant with baby #2. I ovulated on November 17 or so. The next month (December) I did ovulation tests again. I ovulated on December 18. We did not use protection for the 1st time to try to fertilize the egg. However, on December 23 (5 days after ovulation), I had heavy bleeding. It was like a return of menstruation, which I had not had since giving birth. I thought it was weird that it happened so close to ovulation. Same thing in January, I ovulated on January 17 and had bleeding that looked like a period on January 20 (3 days after ovulation). Is it possible that the period is triggered that close to ovulation? Or is it possible that it was a fertilized egg that didn't latch on? If I want to get pregnant soon, is there anything I can do?

Good morning, ma'am,
Ovulation usually occurs 10 to 14 days before menstruation. It is therefore unlikely that the two processes will occur so close together.
How long is your cycle usually?

Hello! Thank you for your answer. I had a 28 day cycle before I got pregnant, but I was on the pill. The first month I stopped taking it, I got pregnant. Otherwise, I haven't had my period yet postpartum, except for the bleeding in December and January since we've been trying for a second child.

Thanks for the feedback. Menstruation can indeed be slow to return and become regular after delivery, especially if you are breastfeeding or pumping milk. This does not necessarily indicate a problem.
I hope I have been helpful, I will remain available if you have any further questions.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
