Can my 2 year old be lactose intolerant?

31-year-old woman3 years ago
Hello, my 2 1/2 year old boy was sent home today and taken out tomorrow for an episode of diarrhea. His general condition is really good. We noticed that his stools had mucus and a little blood (maybe irritation). However, today, he would have consumed a good quantity of milk at daycare, which almost never happens at home (lactose-free milk or drinkable yogurt). Should I see his doctor soon?

Hello,
Lactose intolerance in children under the age of 3 is rare and usually develops after the age of 5. Also, with only one such episode, I wouldn't opt for this option
The presence of clear red blood is possibly related to his episode of diarrhea which irritates the vessels near the anus. As long as the amount of blood is not abundant, it is not worrisome. The presence of black blood or black stools would be more worrisome. This may suggest bleeding higher up in the bowel, so you should usually seek medical attention
If his condition is good (no fever, good nutrition), there seems to be no reason to consult at this time.
