Hello,
there are several conflicting data regarding the risk of breast cancer and the use of hormonal contraceptives (so all hormonal contraceptives except the copper IUD). According to a study reported from the National Cancer Institute by the drug's manufacturing company (Pfizer), among American women of all ethnicities (aged between 30 and 34), the average annual incidence rate of breast cancer would be 26.7 cases per 100,000 women (non-Depo-Provera user women), while an increase of 31.8 cases per year per 100,000 women would be noted among user women. Thus, there is a possibility of an increased risk of breast cancer with the use of hormonal contraceptives. Therefore, women are also advised to make an appointment frequently with their doctor for female examinations (breast and cervix).
Note that most cancers are attributable to many risk factors (sometimes even without any risk factors). Therefore, one should always check the benefits of a medication against the disadvantages. Among the benefits with Depo Provera, there is an association of reduced risk of endometrial cancer, chronic pelvic pain and symptoms associated with endometriosis and or premenstrual syndrome, not to mention the prevention of unwanted pregnancy.
For all the other risk factors associated with breast cancer, I also invite you to consult the Canadian Cancer Society's page: https://www.cancer.ca/en-ca/cancer-information/cancer-type/breast/risks/?region=on#Oral_Contraceptives.
I hope this answers your question.
