Despite the fact that data is relatively limited (as with most medications in pregnant women), Abreva can be used at any stage of pregnancy without concern since it is not just absorbed topically in a localized manner. So you can use it if symptoms just appeared a few hours ago; the sooner you use it, the more effective Abreva will be.
With regard to valacyclovir, however, let me inform you that it is also considered compatible with pregnancy. Based on current data, exposure to valacyclovir during pregnancy does not carry an increased risk of abnormalities.
