Is it possible to have non respiratory allergic reactions (eczema, itchy eyes, abdominal discomfort) with foods (wheat)?

I am currently introducing allergens to my baby and I thought the allergic reactions were going to be anaphylactic or respiratory and not like seasonal allergies, I am a little confused. Thank you

Hello Ma'am,
Food allergy is caused by a reaction of the immune system to the protein in a food, the reaction may be respiratory or not. In effect, allergic reactions to food often manifest as:
  • Itching and irritation of the mouth
  • Hives (itching, rash, and swelling) or skin redness
  • In fact, it can sometimes look like an eczema reaction
  • Stomach pain, vomiting, or diarrhea
  • If the only symptom is abdominal discomfort, many times we can consider this reaction an intolerance!
  • More severe reactions:
  • Difficulty breathing, swallowing, or speaking
  • Coughing
  • Harsh voice
  • Drop in blood pressure with weakness, loss of consciousness, or confusion
On the other hand, itchy eyes are not common symptoms of allergies.
If you think your child has a food allergy, talk to your family doctor or pediatrician, who can refer you to an allergist who can do skin or blood tests to validate the allergy.
To learn more, I refer you to this section of theMontreal Children's Hospital and the Quebec Food Allergy Association.
Do not hesitate to contact me with any additional questions.
Happy day,
