It depends a lot on the care given and the nature of the wound. In general, we try to keep the dressing on for at least 48 to 72 hours.

Did the surgeon give you any information on the subject?

If it is possible for you, try to keep the bandage in place until then.

You could also call the hospital and ask them about it. They are probably in the best position to judge the wound and its care.
