Hello,
The most common symptoms of a urinary tract infection are a burning sensation upon urination (when passing urine), an urgent and frequent need to urinate, discomfort in the lower abdomen, and blood in the urine. If you suspect that you have the same symptoms as your previous infections, it would be possible for the pharmacist to prescribe the same antibiotic that you had provided that your last infection occurred within the last 12 months. Therefore, it would be pertinent to consult your pharmacist in person so that he/she can perform a complete and adequate consultation of your situation.
In the meantime, you could opt for a cranberry-based product (juice, tablets or supplements) over the counter; cranberries help loosen bacteria from the bladder walls and thus reduce your symptoms. However, this will only delay the infection without eliminating the need for an antibiotic in the long run. Drink plenty of fluids to increase the frequency of urination and reduce the infection. Making sure to empty the bladder completely with each urine is also a good idea.
I hope this clears it up for you... If there is anything else, please feel free to contact me again and I will be happy to answer.
Cordially,
David Tan, pharmacist
