Can a pharmacist extend my antibiotic prescription?

26-year-old woman2 years ago
I am finishing a course of Clarithromycin antibiotics (7 days) for bronchitis. I still have the same cough and I started to have greenish secretions and congestion again. (covid test still negative since 3 weeks).

Good morning, ma'am,
Your pharmacist cannot extend this type of prescription
Keep in mind that the cough may take several weeks to resolve, even after it has healed
Did you have these same symptoms (congestion) before starting the treatment?

i had some, but it was much less bad.

Thanks for the feedback!
In this case, the basis of treatment will be nasal hygiene with a saline solution (Hydrasense, Sinus Rinse and others), which can be done as often as needed during the day, and at least 30 minutes before bedtime (if you don't already do it). This will help with congestion and coughing. I also encourage you to drink plenty of fluids, cold or hot depending on your preference.
If the situation persists for more than 7 days without improvement, you should consult again.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
