Can a pharmacist prescribe antibiotics? What should I do?

Hello, I have been coughing a lot for almost a month with episodes where I blow my nose (colored secretions). I have not had any fever since the beginning. It comes and goes. I consulted a pharmacist who told me to take Benylin (extra strong cough) but it only relieves it at the time. I've been trying to get an appointment at a medical clinic without success for 2 weeks.

Good morning, Madam,
Generally, coughing for more than 3 weeks requires a consultation with a physician for further evaluation. Colored secretions can be an indicator of an ongoing infection. You can try the Bonjour Santé platform to make an appointment. You will need to refresh the page several times to increase your chances of finding an appointment. The alternatives are private clinics with associated fees.
Here are some non-pharmacological measures to reduce symptoms:
  • Saline solution for irrigation and cleaning the nose at least twice a day (helps to limit secretions in the throat and for nasal secretions)
  • Tylenol for pain, fever and headaches
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Rest as much as possible
  • Gargle with water and salt (1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt in 250 ml of water) for sore throat
  • Honey to soothe the throat
Hopefully this answers your question,
