Is Paxil safe to use during pregnancy?

22-year-old woman2 years ago
I am pregnant and taking Paxil 30mg. My doctor has strongly suggested that I stay on my antidepressant or stop. I have tried several other medications in the past and Paxil is the only one that works and stabilizes my anxiety disorder. My doctor seemed uninformed about the risks of paxil and pregnancy... after several google readings, I am completely freaked out.

Good morning, ma'am,
Although there is more reassuring data with other medications, it is not recommended to stop taking paroxetine if your situation is well managed with this option. Keep in mind the risks to mom and baby of not treating the condition properly.
I have had patients treated with paroxetine during pregnancy for these very reasons. Follow-up during pregnancy is usually sufficient.
I hope I have reassured you and I am available if you have any further questions!
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
