Can my contraceptive cause diarrhea?

45-year-old woman3 years ago
I am on jencycla for 2 months and a half, and I have a question about the digestive effects, bloating, cramps, accelerated transit. I went from a normal elimination to episodes of loose stools or diarrhea, is it possible that the contraceptive is the cause?

Hello Mrs., thank you for your question!
Diarrhea is very rare with this product, but not impossible. However, in most cases it appears when the medication is started. It is quite rare that the medication causes diarrhea 2 months after starting it.
It is possible that this is a transient event. If this is not the case, you should discuss it with your pharmacist to see if he or she can contact your doctor with alternatives
Finally, be aware that diarrhea can in some cases decrease the effectiveness of your contraceptive. I suggest that you use a barrier method such as a condom until 7 days after the diarrhea has disappeared.
I hope this helps, and I am available if you have any further questions!
