Hello,
In general, if you have missed a dose of citalopram, you should not take it again. You should only wait until your next regular dosing time to continue treatment. For example, if you forgot your Monday night dose, and you realize you forgot on Tuesday morning, you wait until Tuesday night to take your usual dose! (So you don't take the missed dose)!!!
On the other hand, in your case, it seems like it's been several days since you seem to be forgetting. You can resume your citalopram tonight at bedtime. However, it is important to be careful about forgetting. With citalopram, it is possible to have side effects following an abrupt stop of treatment (ex: anxiety, dizziness, unusual dreams, etc.). If you have several consecutive misses, this can be similar to a sudden stop, and you may experience these different symptoms 😨!!!
If you frequently forget your medication, here are some tips you can use to reduce the frequency of your forgetfulness:
- Set an alarm to remember to take the medication
- Insert the taking of the medication into your routine; for example, if you take your citalopram at bedtime, and you tend to have a glass of water before going to bed, you could put your jar in the cabinet with the glasses. (The goal here is that, gradually, taking your medication will become part of your routine 🙂 )
Also, if it's been several days since you forgot your medication and you're experiencing side effects from taking it again; it would be possible to start again with a reduced dose. If this happens for you, I would advise you to call your treating pharmacy so you can discuss this with a pharmacist there.
