It is not prohibited to use Orajel in a breastfed child. However, you should be aware that it may reduce the baby's ability to swallow properly when he is breastfeeding. Indeed, the active ingredient of Orajel tends to sink somewhat in the child's throat, reducing the sensations at this level. As a result, babies sometimes choke a little more when they are at the breast.

That being said, I recommend that you first try acetaminophen (Tylenol or Tempra) if you haven't already. You can also use the old trick of a wet washcloth left in the fridge, which the child can bite. At 6 months of age, your baby could also try ibuprofen (Advil).
