Can I get medication for pink eye without going to the doctor or do I have to go with my son?

38-year-old woman2 years ago
My 4 year old son has yellow secretions coming out of one eye. It happened this morning when he woke up and again during his bath at the end of the day. Can I go to the pharmacy to get something (drops or cream) to cure his eye (which I think is conjunctivitis) or do I have to go see a doctor? Thanks a lot!

Good morning, ma'am,
The term conjunctivitis encompasses any condition that can cause inflammation to the conjunctiva.
In most cases, it is related to the virus, like a cold in the eye, and heals on its own
It is only recommended to monitor the situation. You can clean the area with a wet washcloth (do not share or reuse) and artificial tears such as Systane, Refresh Tears or others can be used to improve comfort.
If the situation persists for more than 7 days without improvement or worsens, you should consult a doctor or optometrist.
I hope I have been helpful to you and remain available if you have any further questions
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
