My toddler has conjunctivitis, how do I treat it?

He is 18 months old, he has a lot of secretions out of both eyes and woke up with one eye almost fully shut. No redness in the eyeball, but redness mostly underneath the eyes.

Hi there,
Sorry for the delayed answer.
If your son's nose is full of mucus, it is a good idea to first start with nasal hygiene techniques in order to reduce the amount of mucus that can transfer to its eyes (there is a small duct between its nose and both its eyes).
In order to do so, I recommend you use this great technique from Hopital Ste-Justine (https://www.chusj.org/getmedia/4288da42-4e62-43c9-8500-c300b1eebc2a/depliant_F-886-A_hygiene-nasale.pdf.aspx?ext=.pdf). You'll find the technique on pages 6 and 7.
For your son, you'll need 5 milliliters of saline water in both nostrils 3 to 5 times a day. It should help drastically in less than 24 hours.
If your son's nose seems ok, I recommend you visit your local pharmacy for a pharmacist to be able to see its eyes and direct you to the best ressource (over-the-counter product vs doctor's appointment).
Have a great day,
Alexandre
